According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), recent evidence indicates that in-person instruction can occur safely without a minimum physical distancing requirement when other mitigation strategies are implemented.
As California schools plan for a complete return to in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year, universal masking and other Covid-19 mitigation strategies will be prioritized.
Masking in school settings regardless of vaccination status:
- When indoors, masks are required for students & adults
- When outdoors, masks are optional for everyone
- On School Buses, masks are required for everyone
There are mask exemptions for people who:
Have medical conditions, mental health conditions or disability that could cause a mask to obstruct breathing or who could not remove a mask without assistance; are younger than two years old; or are hearing impaired. People who are exempt must use a non-restrictive alternative, such as a face shield with a drape on the bottom edge if their condition permits.
